As with many local homes and businesses, Skatetown TX is currently flooded due to Hurricane Harvey. We are closed for the foreseeable future, with no power and no phones. After nearly two feet of rain, we are not sure when we will be open for business again. A large portion of our community is also flooded and without power. Are you safe and able to help? Here are some ways you can support the community during this difficult time.
If you’re not local to this area, consider not coming to help unless you’re part of an organization that’s already equipped to feed and care for volunteers. Instead, donate to local disaster relief charities that have the tools to help effectively. The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund is administered by the city of Houston. If you have space in your home, an organization like AirBNB can help connect you with people who need a place to evacuate. Don’t forget that people may not be able to leave their pets–the SPCA of Texas is one of many organizations putting together pet evacuations. NPR has a good roundup of other ways to donate. Please bear in mind that Skatetown TX is not able to endorse any particular organization. Check out sites like Charity Navigator for resources to do your own research before donating.
Remember, it’s best to donate money instead of items in disaster situations. Donations of food, diapers, clothing, etc., while well-intentioned, create more work for rescue organizations, which are already overworked. But a monetary donation can make a big difference right where it’s needed. If you’re unsure how best to help, check out the websites and social media profiles of organizations local to the greater Houston area; they will know best what they need.
Everyone at Skatetown TX is so proud of our community and our home state. Thank you for your support!
